The Department of German Studies
The Department of German Studies is the earliest and most influential faculty of German language and literature in northeast China. It is also the first of its kind to offer MA degrees in German Studies in the region, and the only one to have a member on the National Advisory Committee for Teaching German Language to Majors in Tertiary Institutions which falls under the Ministry of Education.
The Department is committed to cultivating German majors with solid language proficiency, systematic linguistic and literary knowledge and a broad grasp of related areas. Excellent graduates with good command of German, Chinese and English, as well as a global perspective, work in translation, teaching, research and administration in fields such as foreign affairs, diplomacy, foreign trade, culture, publishing, education, research, and tourism.
The faculty represents a blend of youth and experience, with impressive professional expertise on which to draw. We also receive invaluable assistance and support from the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) which contributes significantly to the high quality of our courses. Among the faculty members, we have a number of recipients of provincial awards for teaching excellence. Our courses have also received provincial recognition for quality, with the German Major program as a whole receiving official acknowledgement as exemplary.
Internships with Faw-Volkswagen and RHI Refractories (Dalian) have been made available to our students. These opportunities are of great value in boosting the students’ linguistic competence and overall employment preparedness, thereby laying the foundation for their future careers.
Joint programs, which provide students with the option of completing a year or more of their studies abroad, have been established with Universität Rostock and Friedrich-Schiller-Universität in Germany, as well as with Fachhochschule des Mittelstands, the latter allowing for graduates to continue onto a master’s degree directly. These programs have turned our graduates into internationalized professionals who are able to apply their expertise in a wide range of settings.
As a result, the first-time employment rate of our graduates has remained above 95%, with a year-on-year increase in the number of successful applicants to MA programs in such prestigious universities as Beijing University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Shanghai International Studies University, Tongji University, and the University of International Business and Economics.
